Hi all, I made a big trip to town, Hillsborough, last night where a

friend gave me a clipping from the local weekly, an ad for "Drought &

Rain, Vol. 2" by Company Ea Sola.

It's a dance performance on Nov 16 and 17 at UNC's beautiful newly

renovated Memorial Hall, "with twelve dancers from the National Ballet

of Vietnam and a traditonal Vietnamese music ensemble. Drought and

Rain

Vol. 2 is a reflection the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of the

next generation. The Chapel Hill performance is the US premiere."

The photo shows two shirtless young men looking intense and Asian, in a

buzz-cut way, and woman with a top in the background throwing her big

black hair around.

I wouldn't miss it. We don't call the theater "Memorial Hall" for

nothing, there are names up and down the walls by the proscenium and

plaques throughout the foyer commemorating the heroes of the struggle

against the Union and then against Black Reconstruction.

But I have to miss this opportunity for dramatic irony. I will be

traveling for my own memory project in NY and Louisville. I don't know

a thing about Ea Sola or Drought & Rain and would love any report.

Ea Sola Thuy is a French-Vietnamese choreographer, who for the past 15

years

has concentrated on dance productions focused on memory. Her shows have

appeared in Vietnam and toured abroad. This recent one utilizes light

and

sound, as well as movement. My last meeting with Ea Sola was in Sapa a

few

years back. She's a fascinating personality, and would no doubt

appreciate

Dan's dramatic irony.

I have also known Ea Sola for years. She divides her

time between Paris and Hanoi. Do you know if her piece

is touring anywhere else in the US? She tours Europe

regularly but I have not seen a US production in a

while.
