Dear list, I¹m writing on behalf of a friend who is making a documentary/experimental film about Hanoi. He¹s looking for some interesting contemporary Vietnamese or Vietnamese-American music that he could use as part of his soundtrack. Does anyone have any suggestions I could pass along to him? Thanks, Dana Sachs

I tend to think of Tran Thu Ha as the most interesting contemporary Vietnamese singer. Though she's been around for some time... Markus

1) By Trần Tiến (chú của ca sĩ Trần Thu Hà): - Hà Nội năm 2000 - Ngẫu hứng bên sông Hồng - Dòng sông mùa thu (Tran Tien introduces the song by talking about his childhood memories in Ha Noi, which I find very touching)

2) By Phú Quang - Chiều Phủ Tây Hồ - Em ơi Hà Nội phố (the version by Mỹ Linh) - Im lặng đêm Hà Nội - Lãng đãng chiều đông Hà Nội

3) By Trịnh Công Sơn - Nhớ mùa thu Hà Nội (my favorite, but it's kind of played out) - Đoản khúc thu Hà Nội (not so popular, but OK)

4) Trương Quý Hải - Hà Nội mùa vắng những cơn mưa (another one of my favorite, also a bit played out)

5) Check out the CD "Nhớ Mùa Thu Hà Nội" by ca sĩ Thanh Lam I just realized the theme seems to be Hà Nội mùa thu... I hope that helps. hoang

Dear List,

My top favorites here:

(1) Hà Nội Mùa Lá Bay - only the version by NGOC

TAN -very soothing

(2) Hà Nội Mùa Thu

Sáng tác: Vũ Thanh

Thể hiện: Mỹ Linh

The lyrics:

Em nghe chăng, trong lắng sâu nơi

hồng trái tim mình

Hà Nội mùa thu, ôi sao xuyến trong lòng ta

Như bâng khuâng nghe gió đưa

Vang vọng giữa Ba Đình

Lời Người thu năm ấy

Màu cờ thu năm ấy

Vẫn đây xanh trời mây

Thu đi dài năm tháng

Vinh quang và duyên dáng

Cho ta khuôn mặt sáng ngời

Dáng vóc của Thủ Đô

Ôi sao yêu quý, Hà Nội ơi!...

(3) Nhớ Về Hà Nội

Sung by: Quang Dung

(Hoang Hiep)

I wish someone didn't think Vietnamese was easy:

Dana, I assumed you were looking for more of a musical score rather than the names of traditional or pop tunes, in which case I would recommend that your friend take a look (and a listen) at some wonderful contemporary music by Nguyen Quoc Trung, one of the exemplary young composers in Hanoi. His "Road to Infinity" is one example -- a major work with a stage presentation component that has been performed at the Opera House in Hanoi and other venues, and also in Japan and I think several other countries. Trung combines traditional Vietnamese instruments and harmonies with electronic keyboards and bongos and variations of male and female vocals on top of jazz elements. Very innovative stuff. You (or your friend) could contact Trung directly at orient_production at fpt.vn and he could respond about this or other compositions that you might want to consider (he has CDs and DVDs of all, I'm sure). Trung's English is pretty good, and if the correspondence becomes very involved he has plenty of friends and associates whose English is fluent. Chuck

For some European-Vietnamese jazz experimentations, see: Nguyen Le (some cd's with Huong Thanh), formerly guitarist in one of the first french Jazz fusion band Ultramarine, also relative of the notorious erudite Le Thanh Khoi. Niels Lan Doky, Minh Lan Doky (2 danish brothers, one is bass player, the other pianist)
