List,

Does anybody have suggestions for texts/resources on traditional textiles in Vietnam (produced by Vietnamese and/or minority groups)?

Thanks!

You might check with Duong Bich Hanh--last I knew her e-mail was dbhanh@u.washington.edu, but I don't know if this is still active.

Professor Michael Howard, an anthropologist at Simon Fraser University in Canada, has published rather profusely about textiles in Southesast Asia, including Vietnam, sometimes co-authored with Be Kim Nhung. His university webpage has an impressive list of his books on textiles, including three titles on textiles from Vietnam.

Hi Molly,

The Museum of Ethnology in Ha Noi has about three texts on Vietnamese textiles available for purchase, from what I recall. You can contact them directly at vme18@hn.vnn.vn or see their website at www.vne.org.vn

I don't remember the other titles, but the one I own is:

_Tai Textiles in the Mekong region: Continuity and change_, produced there.

The following recent paper might be a useful lead regarding minorities:

Turner, S. 2007: Trading Old Textiles: the Selective Diversification of Highland Livelihoods in Northern Vietnam. Human Organization. 66 (4), 389-404.

Hey Molly,

I would recommend the following reference because the edited papers

situate Vietnamese textiles in a broader regional context:

Puranananda, Jane, ed. 2004. THROUGH THE THREADS OF TIME: SOUTHEAST ASIAN

TEXTILES. James Thompson Foundation: Bangkok.

all best,

christian

I might suggest that you contact the Centenary College Museum of Art in Shreveport Louisiana which has an expanding collection of Vietnamese textiles, based on the paintings and drawings of the French artist Despujols [sp?]. They should be very happy to share any contacts and resources they have.
