Bob Jones Collection

The Indochina collection of Robert Jones III was acquired by the University of Washington Libraries in 2013.  Attached below is a complete list of the book-type printed materials that were in the collection.  Besides some 4,000 monograph titles, the collection includes extensive journal holdings, including the Huế newspaper Lập Trường: tuà̂n báo chính trị, văn hóa, xã hội, Huế,1964- (recently digitized by the Center for Research Libraries and available to CRL member libraries), and some working files from Jones' time with the CORDS administration in Saigon.  Serials from the collection have been added to the UW Libraries serials collections, unless they are awaiting preservation treatment. Much of the collection has been cataloged for the general book stacks and is available for loan via inter-library borrowing, but a significant proportion of the book material is awaiting preservation treatment, and will eventually be housed in closed stack areas of Special Collections.  Materials to be transferred to Special Collections include rare Vietnamese language and French languguage materials published in throughout Vietnam in the 1920s-30s and in Hanoi in the early 1940s, as well as the office files and photographs included in the collection.  We are selectively scanning materials for preservation purposed and those items will submitted to HathiTrust for archiving.

Unfortunately, although Bob Jones was able to accumulate and preserve his remarkable collection through the most adverse conditions of the war in Việt Nam, it suffered significant water damage in a flooding event while in storage in the US.  As a result, many of the titles are still awaiting repair and preservation treatment.
