"One of the great American authors and editors of the Vietnamese of 1975
has gone missing, as the Vietnamese language puts it. This obituary is from
the newspaper which Anh Do <https://www.facebook.com/anh.do.58152559>'s
father founded. I published one of Vo Phien's essays in my first issue of
Viet Nam Forum. It concerns a painter who discovers in California that all
those Americans who bought his work in Saigon were buying souvenirs of that
country rather than the work of an artist. Smart man.
The English-language scholar of Vo Phien in the United States is John C.
Schafer. John taught English for a living, 4/4, at a small college.
Straight shooting about a man and a body of writing he loved as we all need
love, as an individual and as work."

FOR THE RECORD
In photos accompanying a previous version of this article, Vo Phien's name was misspelled as Vo Phein. Also, a previous version of the article gave his age as 90. While his date of birth made him 89, he was considered in Vietnamese culture to be 90 based on the lunar calendar.
