Expected Student Outcomes (Objective/Learning Intent)
Students will be able to:
1. Describe the life and teachings of Confucius.
2. Explain the teachings of Confucianism.
Common Core Literacy Standard:
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
SDIAE: 5 W’s/Chunking: Starter: Students will read a passage and be able to identify the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why) from the passage.

Direct Instruction (I Do…) (10 min.)
SDIAE: Model: Direct Teach: Confucius Teachings: Teacher will go over the directions to the assignments. Teacher will explain they will be watching a short video clip (4:29) and explain that they will be using the video to complete their Cornell Notes. Teacher will explain the purpose of the hints. Students will work in pairs to complete their assignment. Teacher will discuss and model the proper way to use the classroom headphones.
SDIAE: Close Reading/Talk to the Text: Teachings of Confucius: Teacher will lead students in a close read of a chunked passage from the text. Teacher will then use talk to the text to annotate the passage.
Guided Practice (We Do…) (5 min.)
SDIAE: TPS: Confucius Teachings Video Based Cornell Notes: Teacher and students will go over the answer to the Cornell Notes. Teacher will clarify and provide further examples and check for understanding.
Independent Practice (You Do…) (20 min.)
SDIAE: Cornell Notes/Video Clip/Diads/Talk to the Text: Confucius Teachings Video Based Cornell Notes: Students will complete their Cornell Notes based on the life and teachings of Confucius. Video will cover the biography, education, and philosophy of Confucius. Students will share their notes with their partner to verify their answers.
SDIAE: Chunking/Annotate/EQ/Discussion: Teachings of Confucius: Students will annotate a chunked passage from the textbook dealing with the teachings of Confucianism. Students will then apply that to identifying and discussing which of the three images depict the teachings of Confucius.
