Correlation to State Content Standards
7.3: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of China in the Middle Ages.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.
8.4.1: Describe the country’s physical landscapes, political divisions, and territorial expansion during the terms of the first four presidents.
8.4.3: Analyze the rise of capitalism and the economic problems and conflicts that accompanied it

1. Compare & Contrast Hinduism and Buddhism. (7th Grade)
2. Understand why Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory. (8th Grade).
3. Understand the purpose of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. (8th Grade)

Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/Essential Question: Hinduism: Teacher will read the chunked passage of Hinduism and its believes. Teacher will provide further information during lecture.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Model/Lecture: Louisiana Territory: Teacher will lecture on the issues surrounding Jefferson’s choice to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France. This will follow after going over the independent work students were to answer on their own prior to class as they analyzed a series of population maps of the U.S from 1790-1820.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/VBQ: Hinduism: Teacher and students will go over how social media and war would be seen through the perspective of Hinduism.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: U.S. Population: Teacher will go over how students should have analyzed the map and used it to answer the questions. Teacher would have already checked answers of those students who attempted to complete the assignment on their own.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking: QuickWrite: Perspective Buddhism: Students will read a chunked passage about Buddhism and then explain how a Buddhist would view social media and the concept of wars.
8th Grade-SDAIE: VBQ: Lewis and Clark Expedition: Students will watch a series of two short clips and will be guided with Video Based Questions. Video and questions will help students understand the goal tasked by Jefferson to Lewis, Clark and the Corps of Discovery and they explore the Louisiana Territory.
Homework.
