2. Identify the end of Feudal Japan.

4. Compare and Contrast a samurai's armor to that of a medieval knight.
5. Create a samurai mask.

RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will find two evidences to support the CLAIM from today's starter about George Washington Carver.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach: Origins of Bushido: Teacher will lecture on the origins of Bushido and how it influenced the way of life for the samurai. Teacher will teach students that Bushido came from three religions that influenced Japan; Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shintoism. Students will explain how each of those religions was crucial for the samurai.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Review answers: Teacher will go over the answers to the close paragraph and the text related questions about the end of feudal Japan.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cloze Paragraph: History of the Samurai: Students will complete a short cloze paragraph explaining the history and role of the samurai. They will use their previous graphic organizers to help them answer the question.
SDAIE: Movie Clip/VBQ: End of Feudal Japan: Students will view a clip that focuses on Japan's negotiations with the U.S. and Commodore Matthew Perry. The event that unfolded marked the end of feudal Japan. Students will answer two video based questions that guided them to that conclusion.
SDAIE: visual: Compare and Contrast: Students will compare and contrast a samurais armor with that of a knights armor and draw conclusions. They will answer two questions and use their visual findings to help them answer the questions.
SDAIE: Visual: Samurai Mask: Students will create a samurai mask and be given a set of directions to think about. They will answer three questions about the mask they created and why they chose those options. While students are working on their masks, teacher will show a clip on how to forge a samurai weapon from the History channel.
