Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of the Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: CER/QuickWrite: Salt Trade: Teacher will guide students in a CER writing prompt in describing the hardships of the salt trade in current day Ghana.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Class Discussion: Washington’s Farewell Address: Teacher will guide students in analyzing Washington’s Farewell Address. Students will summarize Washington’s advice and provide current examples.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Video Clip/VBQ/CER: Salt: Teacher and students will write the answer to the Video Based Question using the CER method. Students will provide answers and teacher will model the CER method with their answers.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Close Paragraph: Teacher will go over the answers to the student’s graphic organizer. Students will be given time to make corrections to their assignment and ask for any further clarification.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Video Clip/VBQ/CER: Salt Trade: Students will watch a video based on the salt trade and take notes on the hardships the traders encounter. Notes will be used to answer the Video Based Question (VBQ).
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/TRQ: Fall of Ghana: Students will read a passage dealing with the fall of Ghana and rise of Mali. Students will then answer a series of Text Related Questions (TRQ).
8th Grade-SDAIE: QuickWrite: Washington’s Memoirs: Students will analyze a quote taken from Washington’s Memoirs and explain why he would have said such a comment. Students will provide examples from Washington’s life in their answer.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/Metacognition: Washington’s Instagram: Students will create an Instagram page highlighting what they believe to be three of Washington’s top accomplishment in his entire life. They will include 3 pictures, an original hashtag, and an explanation of what made him stand out.
