Correlation to State Content Standards
7.2.2: Trace the origins of Islam and the life and teachings of Muhammad, including Islamic teachings on the connection with Judaism and Christianity.
8.2.2: Analyze the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution and the success of each in implementing the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Create guidelines to charter a student base Constitution. (8th Grade).
2. Understand the workings of the Articles of Confederation. (8th Grade)
3. Understand the origins, teachings, and connection with Judaism and Christianity. (7th Grade).
4. Identify and Understand the spread and growth of Islam. (7th Grade).
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach: Creating a Nation: Teacher will recap the American Revolution and explain the problem now facing the Colonies, that of not having someone in charge and setting up rules. Students will be given four questions dealing with possible problem scenario in which students will have to come up with their own requirements for their own nation.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach: Origins of Islam: Teacher will review the Origins of Islam and the overall goal of it.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Vocabulary: Teacher will go over the answers to the tier 2 and 3 vocabulary words and provide examples.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Muhammad & Islam Close Paragraph: Teacher and students will review their answers. Teacher would check those students who finished on time.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Book to paper: Vocabulary Words: Students will define 5 tier 2 and 3 words.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Chunking/Annotate: Articles of Confederation: Students will annotate the chunked passage dealing with the Articles of Confederation and answer an essential question. Students will also read and annotate the land ordinance act. Teacher will demonstrate how they acquired land and requirements for becoming a state.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Cloze Paragraph: Origins of Islam: Students will complete a Cloze paragraph summary written by the teacher about the Origins of Islam. Students will have to review their past assignments to complete the paragraph.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Visual: Islam Timeline: Students will complete a timeline that demonstrates how Islam grew and spread throughout the Arabian Peninsulua.
Homework.
