Correlation to State Content Standards
7.3: Students analyze the geographical, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of China in the Middle Ages.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Describe the divers geography of China.
2. Label key geographical locations of China on a map.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from "This day in History" and be able identify the topic/claim of the passage.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk/Close Read/Annotate/Direct Teach: GeoChallenge Imperial Challenge: Teacher will lead students in a close reading of a chunked passage from the textbook introducing them to the geographical features of China. There are four sections in which the teacher will close read two of them and after each paragraph teacher will display a short video clip that goes along with the geography of China.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: GeoChallenge: Imperial China: Teacher will go over the annotations from the third and fourth paragraph of the reading. Teacher will provide further explanations.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Whisper Read/Chunking/Annotations: GeoChallenge: Imperial China Students will read and annotate the last two paragraphs of the reading. They will be prompted to what to annotate in the passage. Students will share their answers with their groups.
SDAIE: TPS/Visuals/EQ: Imperial China Visual Storyboards: Once students have finished the reading, they will revisit each paragraph and provide a visual that represents the topic of each of the four paragraphs. Students will then answer the essential questions where they will explain how China was able to flourish for two thousand years.
Homework.
