Today I am learning about the Maya religion by:

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Chunk Reading/5 W's/Text to Speech: Starter: Students will read a chunk passaged (or have it read to them) and identify the 5 W's. Reading is taken from "This Day in History" from the History Channel.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Teacher will go over the direction of the assignment. Teacher will ask students to pick a number from 1-4. Each student will pick a different number. Once numbers are selected teacher will show the class what section they will be reading based on the number they selected. Teacher will instruct students on how to read and annotate the passage using the chunk laminated passage and dry eraser maker.
Guided Practice (x min.)
SDAIE: Progress Monitor: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Teacher will progress monitor students reading and annotation. As students signal they are done, teacher will come over and verify their annotations by placing the teachers annotated reading next to the students. This will visually verify to the student that they are comprehending the reading and pulling the important information.
Independent Practice (16 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk Reading/annotate/text to speech/Native Language: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Students will be given the chunked passage that they will have read (or use text to speech) and annotate the evidence that are important to the following topics; Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok a tok, and Sacred Rounds. As students finish their annotations it will be reviewed by the teacher and then if its 90% accurate, they will transfer their answers to the graphic organizer. If students finish early they will will complete any missing assignments from last week or their homework Edpuzzle.
Homework.

Closure (3 min.)

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W’s: Students will work on identifying the 5 W’s on a short reading from “This day in History.”
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Teacher will model how to complete the Jigsaw assignment by going over the introduction and using Talk to Text to come up with the note using the hint that is provided. After students are all done with their assignment Teacher will go over each of the four sections clarify the Maya's religious beliefs and practice and provide a short video clip that goes along with one of the four categories discussed from the text.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Teacher will review the answers to each of the four sections of the unit dealing with the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds section from the text.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: JigSaw/Chunk Reading/TPS/Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Students will select one of the four readings that will be chunked and provided by the teacher for each section. Each section will have a selected chunk reading that covers the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds from the textbook page 378-379. The reading will be chunked to two paragraphs about 9 sentences. Students will use that reading to gather information for their topics. Once they are done with that each student will then share their findings and teach the other members of their group about their topic as the other members write down their notes in their Cornell Note section of the Graphic Organizers.
