Correlation to State Content Standards
7.2: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Islam in the Middle Ages.
7.2.1: Identify the physical features and describe the climate of the Arabian peninsula, its relationship to surrounding bodies of land and water, and nomadic and sedentary ways of life.
8.1.1: Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Identify and Understand the overall impact of the battle of Yorktown. (8th Grade).
2. Understand the importance of the Treaty of 1783. (8th Grade)
3. Explain the origins of Islam. (7th Grade)
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Chunking/Annotate/Talk to text/Video Clip: Turning Point in the War: Teacher will close read two chunked sections. One dealing with Washington’s plan to win the war and the other dealing with Battle of Saratoga. Students will listen to the audio talk to the text from the teacher to guide their annotations. Students will answer an essential question focusing on the reading.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunk/Close Read/Talk to Text/Annotate: Islam and Muhammad: Teacher will close read two paragraphs dealing with Islam and Muhammad. After the passage is read teacher will summarize and explain what is going on. Students will then listen to the audio of "talk to the text" and annotate the important information from each passage.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Vocabulary/Annotation/ Vocabulary: Teacher and students will go over the answer to the first three boxes of the graphic organizer.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Vocabulary Pictures: Students will look up 8 tier 3 words terms for this unit. Once students look up the word they will have to analyze 6 pictures and match the pictures to one of the terms. Two terms will not be used. Teacher will go over the answers and explain the terms in the process.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Talk to Text/Audio/Annotate: Turning Point: After the close reading of the passage, students will use the talk to text audio created by the teacher to help guide their annotations. Students will answer the essential question after each passage.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Sentence Stems/Video Clip: Winter at Valley Forge: Students will watch a video clip demonstrating the hardships encountered by Washington and his men at Valley Forge and how they overcame those hardships.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/Focus Notes: Islam and Muhammad: Students will complete a series of focus notes dealing with the three essential questions. Students will use the chunked passage to find only the evidence and facts that will support the answers to those essential questions. Students will then answer the essential question.
