7.2.2: Trace the origins of Islam and the life and teachings of Muhammad, including Islamic teachings on the connection with Judaism and Christianity.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Identify the Five Pillars of Islam and associate each one with its definition and basic practices.
2. Explain the meaning of the Five Pillars of Islam and associate each with social and cultural practices in the Arabian Peninsula.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5/5 min.) Daily Journals: Students will use the chunk reading from "This day in History" to provide evidence to support the CLAIM in their daily Starter.
Direct Instruction (5/10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: The Five Pillars of Islam: Teacher will go over the directions of the Jigsaw Activity. Students will select the pillar they want. They will read the chunked section or use the Chromebook to follow along. As they read they will annotate using the dry eraser. Once they are done they will call over the teacher and check for their annotations. If 80% accurate, they will then watch a clip that is time stamped on their Graphic Organizer section. After that they will use their reading annotations to complete their Cornell Notes. (November 16, 2022)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Video Clips: The Five Pillars of Islam: Teacher will clarify and go over the Five Pillars of Islam. Teacher will provide further explanation and examples. Teacher will also link Islam with the other two religions; Judaism and Christianity. In between pillars students will watch a short video that introduces the pillar before advancing to the next one. SDAIE:TPS: The Five Pillars of Islam Cornell Notes: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the Five Pillars of Islam Cornell Notes. Students will make changes to their answers if need in red font.
Independent Practice (35/20 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Cornell Notes/Annotate/Text to Speech/Video Clips: Five Pillars of Islam: Students will be appointed one of the 5 pillars of Islam to read and become an expert in. Once they have read the section they will complete the graphic organizer dealing only with their own Pillar. They will write down the explanation and what the Pillar asks Muslims to complete and the importance of it. Students will then go around and share their knowledge of the Pillar with other students. (November 16, 2022)
SDAIE: Jigsaw/Cornell Notes: The Five Pillars of Islam: Students will now share their Pillar with the rest of their groups. One student will talk and present their Pillar as the other 3 students listen and fill in their Cornell Notes. Students Cornell Notes should be done by the time everyone has shared their answers and presented to the group. Corrections will be made as teacher presents the information. (November 17, 2022)
