Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.2: Discuss the geographical borders of the empire at its height and the factors that threatened its territorial cohesion.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Trace the origins of Rome through its geographical advantages.
2. Identify and label the various geographical features of the Italian Peninsula.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will complete their daily starter based on "This Day in History." Students will be given a reading that is out of order. Students will have to rad and place the reading in order of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Close Read/Annotate/Talk to Text: Teacher will close read a chunked paragraph dealing with how Rome was started and the importance of the the Tiber RIver. Teacher will clarify and provide examples of the people who settled Rome. Teacher will use talk to text to help students annotate the passage. Between the two paragraphs teacher will play video clip that shows the geographical features of the Italian Peninsula.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Map Challenge: Teacher will go over the answers to the geographical features that were obtained from the reading after students have been giving time to complete the section.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Metacognition/Chunk/TPS: Map Challenge: Students will use the reading from the geography challenge to identify and label the geographical features of the Italian Peninsula. Students will then discuss within their group members to discuss the benefits of each of the 6 geographical features that were identified in the reading. Once that is done students will label the geographical features and label them on the map to complete the map challenge.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: Ancient Rome Overview due by Friday at 5 p.m.
Closure (5 min.)
1. Clean up.
