Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.4: Trace the growth of the Arabic language in government, trade, and Islamic scholarship in West Africa.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of the Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
8.3.4. Understand how the conflicts between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton resulted in the emergence of two political parties (e.g., view of foreign policy, Alien and Sedition Acts, economic policy, National Bank, funding and assumption of the revolutionary debt).

2. Create Mansa Musa’s social media acknowledging three of his achievements (7th Grade)
3. Describe Hamilton’s upbringing. (8th Grade).
4. Explain and Identify the rise and stance of the Federalists Party. (8th Grade)
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Chunk: Mali Government/Written language: Teacher will close read the primary account from Ibn Battuta visit to Mali. Teacher will then read the section dealing with the origins of written language.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Annotate/EQ/Talk to Text: Alexander Hamilton: Teacher will close read two chunked sections dealing with Hamilton’s early life to rise in power. Students will be guided to annotate the passage and then answer the essential question. After teacher will show the introduction to Broadway’s Hamilton which covers what was read.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Essential Questions: Teacher will go over the essential questions and teacher will show students his version of Mansa Musa’s social media page.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Federalist Party: Teacher will go over and explain the importance of each of the 4 section that students were asked to answer and provide further explanation.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunk: Social Media: Students will create Mansa Musa’s social media page. In it, students will be tasked by explaining his 3 greatest accomplishments to the empire of Mali.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Whisper/Focus Notes: Federalist Party: Students will be tasked to read about the origins of the Federalist Party. They will read about the parties views on human nature, government, economy, and Britain v. France. Students will read and then provide Focus Notes that answers the question provide for each section. Question is used to guide students reading and understanding.
Homework.
