Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.3: Describe the establishment by Constantine of the new capital in Constantinople and the development of the Byzantine Empire, with an emphasis on the consequences of the development of two distinct European civilizations, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic, and their two distinct views on church-state relations.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Byzantine Empire by:
1. Comparing & Contrasting the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church..
2. Understanding the death and legacy of Constantine.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Chunk Reading/EQ/DOK 3: Students will read a chunk passage from History Channels "This week in History" and use the context clues along with their prior knowledge to answer the DOK 3 essential question.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach: Graphic Organizer: Teacher will front load students on today's assgingment dealing with comparing the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church and the Video Based Questions dealing with Constantine's death and legacy.
Guided Practice (x min.)
SDAIE: Progress Monitoring: Graphic Organizer : Teacher will progress monitor students activity and check and correct their assignment on the spot. If they get it right they progress to box 4 dealing with the Video based questions about the death and legacy of Constantine.
Independent Practice (35 min.)
SDAIE: Visual: Graphic Organizer/Venn Diagram: Western and Eastern Churches: Students will be given 6 roles of the churches. They will use the Venn Diagram that explains the role of each of the churches to identify which of the churches has those 6 roles. When done they will call on teacher to check their answer.
SDAIE: Sentence Stem/Video Clip/VBQ: Death & Legacy of Constantine: Students will watch a video clip that explains what happened to Constantine as he was dying and his greatest legacy. Students will answer 3 questions in complete sentences and turning in their assignment when done.
Homework.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Starter: Students will take their Student Quiz based on their starters from last week.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Cloze Read/Talk to the Text: Constantinople: Teacher will lead the class in a close read of the section dealing with Constantinople (p. 100). Teacher will clarify and explain the reading after each paragraph and check for student understanding as students complete their Cornell Notes from the reading. Once the reading is done, students will watch a video clip that visually explains the reading and covers the two objectives above as well.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Constantinople: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the Constantinople Cornell Notes.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Talk to the Text/Cornell Notes: Constantinople: Students will read page 100 dealing with the social, political, and economic rise of Constantinople. They will complete their Cornell Notes which have hints modeled after talking to the text to guide their reading and comprehension of the section. Students will watch a video clip afterwards that will help them provide further explanation for Constantine's decision for making Constantinople and explain one of the issues he faced that will be answered in their essential question.
Homework.
