Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
I am learning about how the development of the gold and salt trade influenced the wealth and expansion of the Kingdom of Ghana by:
1. Describing how government officials and governors helped the king rule his empire.
2. Defining the trans-Saharan trade and identifying the goods exchanged between West and North Africa.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read and will describe at least one piece of evidence that will support the the main topic from the chunk passage from "This Day in History."
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Annotation/EQ: Ghana’s Government & Military CN: Teacher will close read the passage in their textbook pages 224-225.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: CER: Teacher will go over the answers to the Cornell Notes.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Ghana’s Government and Military: Students will use page 224-225 of their textbook to complete their Cornell Notes.
SDAIE: Graphic Organizer: Trade The Source of Ghana’s Wealth: Students will read page 226 and be able to explain the Trans Saharan trade and items exchanged in the area.
