Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.1 Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Incan economies, trade, and development of urban societies.
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, warfare, religious belies and practices, and slavery.
7.7.3: Explain how and where each empire arose and how the empires were defeated by the Spanish.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Mayan empire by:
Reviewing the location, rise, social ranking, achievements, and fall of the Mayan Empire.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W’s: Students will read a section from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, Why.)
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model/Scaffold: Maya Review: Teacher will go over the directions on how to complete the assignment. Teacher will explain the layout of the graphic organizer and show the class were they can find the answer by revisiting the assignments on their Google Classroom. Teacher will scaffold questions 1-3 and guide them to their past assignments where they can find the answers. Each question on the Graphic Organizer has the name of the assignment completed in class where they can find the answers. As we go over the questions, teacher will showcase the assignment on the projector with the exact box highlighted.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Review: Teacher will take volunteers to answer the remaining questions on the review guide with the students.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Graphic Organizer/TPS/Chunking: Mayan Review: Students work will be grouped into two sections of 10 minutes to answer three questions; questions 4-6 and 7-9. Teacher will monitor, correct, and input those students who finish the sections on their own with 85% accuracy or better. Once the 10 minutes are up, teacher will go over the answers and repeat again. If work is not completed students are to finish and turn it in at home.
