Expected Student Outcomes (Objective/Learning Intent)
Students will be able to:
1. Describe & Identify the developments of Imperial China discoveries and inventions.
Common Core Literacy Standard:
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDIAE: TPS/CER: Identifying Claim: Students will read 4 sentences taken from "This Day in History" and be able to identify the claim.
Direct Instruction (I Do…) (10 min.)
SDIAE: Direct Teach/Lecture: Life under Mongol Rule: Teacher will provide a small lecture about how life in Asia was under the Mongol Rule. Teacher will hit the key points of the Focus Notes that students were suppose to answer and then share with their group members. Teacher will provide further clarification for the students and give more examples.
SDIAE: Model: China Discoveries and Inventions: Teacher will go over the directions to the assignment on how they will be reading information and trying to analyze a picture of the reading to identify how the item worked and the influence it had. Information will be presented in 11 small squared readings.
Guided Practice (We Do…) (10 min.)
SDIAE: TPS: Chinese Discoveries & Inventions: Teacher will go over the answer and provide video clips (if available) for the inventions that the Chinese created.
Independent Practice (You Do…) (25 min.)
SDIAE: Chunked Reading/Graphic Organizer/group: Chinese Discoveries & Inventions: Students will work in their groups of four. Students will be handed an envelope with 11 short passages that explain a Chinese discovery or an invention. They will read the passage and then use the information to identify one of the 11 pictures in the graphic organizer. They will then write a brief explanation on how it works and then how it influenced the world.
Homework.
