7th grade will analyze a Mayan Glyph and decipher the meaning. Peasants can't drink Cocoa.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teaching: Colonial Postcard: Teacher will go over the directions about creating a Postcard. Students will chose one of the colonies and use the information from their graphic organizer to invite someone over. Criteria is on the postcard along with rubric. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: TPS/Video Clip: Maya 101: Students will watch a video and decide if the Mayan were civilized and would have to provide one example from the video. Students will discuss their answer with the group then type it in on the Google Stream. (7th Grade)
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model: Colonial Postcard: Teacher will show examples of postcards from around famous city destination. (8th Grade)
SDAIE:Cloze Read: Mayan Class Structure: Teacher will Cloze Read the section Class Structure and guide them in filling in the first tier of the class pyramid about the ruler.. (7th Grade).
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: CER: Colonial Postcard: Students will write a postcard. In the postcard they will try to persuade someone to come over to that colony. They will mention 3 reasons the colony is better than the others and what sets it apart. Students will then create a drawing in the front of the postcard along with a slogan for their colony. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: Whisper Read/TPS: Maya Class Structure: Students will read the class structure section on page 374-375 and complete the class structure pyramid. They will write down 3 key responsibilities for each class level. (7th grade)

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
