Correlation to State Content Standards
7.6.6: Discuss the causes and course of the religious Crusades and their effects on the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish populations in Europe, with emphasis on the increasing contact by Europeans with cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean world.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the significance of the city of Jerusalem for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
2. Identify reasons why each faith sought to defend Jerusalem as their Holy City.
3. Identify the impact Pope Urban II speech had on the Crusades.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.) Starter: Students will complete their Starter using a chunked section of "This Day in History" were they find the EVIDENCE to the CLAIM given by the teacher in each of the Starter.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Chunked/Close Read/Annotate/Video Clip: Pope Urban II Speech: Teacher will lead students with a chunked reading of Pope Urban II's speech of Claremont in 1095. The speech will identify and explain how the Pope was able to begin the Crusades and get Europeans to take up arms. Video clips will be shown between the sections.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Visual/Group/TPS: Holy Land Map: Teacher and students will analyze a map of the Holy Land and answer three questions. They will be asked to identify the main religions that are present in the Holy Land, landmarks, and the importance of those landmarks.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Annotate/Essential Question/Sentence Stem/TPS/Wait Time/Video Clip: Pope Urban II's Speech: After the lead close reading by the teacher, students will be guided on annotating the chunked reading from the primary source of Pope Urban II's speech of Claremont in 1095. Students will be able to identify the reasons why Europeans were eager to take up the cross and battle the Muslims. Students will identify the goal and objective of the Crusades based on Pope Urban II perspective.

SDAIE: Sentence Stems/TPS: Pope Urban II Speech: After students are given time to work independently on their assignment teacher will go over the answers to the essential questions.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Annotate/Essential Question/Sentence Stem/TPS/Wait Time: Pope Urban II's Speech: Students will answer the essential questions using the sentence stems from the question. They will provide examples from the primary source (it has been scaled down to be accessible to the students readability).
SDAIE: CER/QuickWrite: Pope Urban II last line: Students will analyze the last line from Pope Urban II speech and determine from that sentence why so many took up the cross and embarked on the Crusades. Students will use he CER method to answer the QuickWrite.
