7.1.3: Describe the establishment by Constantine of the new capital in Constantinople and the development of the Byzantine Empire, with an emphasis on the consequences of the development of two distinct European civilizations, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic, and their two distinct views on church-state relations.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Starter: Students will take their Student Quiz based on their starters from last week.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Cloze Read/Talk to the Text: Constantinople: Teacher will lead the class in a close read of the section dealing with Constantinople (p. 100). Teacher will clarify and explain the reading after each paragraph and check for student understanding as students complete their Cornell Notes from the reading. Once the reading is done, students will watch a video clip that visually explains the reading and covers the two objectives above as well.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Constantinople: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the Constantinople Cornell Notes.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Talk to the Text/Cornell Notes: Constantinople: Students will read page 100 dealing with the social, political, and economic rise of Constantinople. They will complete their Cornell Notes which have hints modeled after talking to the text to guide their reading and comprehension of the section. Students will watch a video clip afterwards that will help them provide further explanation for Constantine's decision for making Constantinople and explain one of the issues he faced that will be answered in their essential question.
