Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, war fare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
8.1.1: Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Create a timeline about the Battle of Bunker Hill. (8th Grade).
2. Explain the hardships encountered by Washington has he took command of the Continental Army. (8th Grade)
3. Create a letter to King George III explaining why the colonies are breaking all political ties with Great Britain. (8th Grade)
4. Identify and Explain the social, political, geographical, and achievements of the Inca Empire (7th Grade)
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach/Video Clip: Battle of Bunker Hill: Teacher will discuss the importance of the first official battle of the American Revolution and make sure students timelines are correct.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach: Inca Review: Teacher will go over the directions to the Inca review and go over the first question. Teacher will show students what previously completed worksheets they can answer the review questions.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Battle of Bunker Hill & Washington takes Command: Teacher and students will go over the answer to the sections. Students will make corrections.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Inca Review: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the Inca Review worksheet.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Whisper Read/Video Clip/Timeline: Battle of Bunker Hill: Students will read the events of Bunker Hill and summarize the events in order on their graphic organizer.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Whisper Read/Video Clip/Focus Notes: Washington Takes Command: Students will use the two Focus Questions on their graphic organizer to help them guide their reading and find evidence to support their answers. Students will answer the essential question. Teacher will play a video debunking myths about the Continental Army.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition: Inca Review: Students will answer a series of questions dealing with the Inca Empire. All answers can be found in the four graphic organizers that we have completed for this unit. Students need to be resourceful and go back through their work to search for the answers.
