Correlation to State Content Standards
7.6.3: Understand the development of feudalism, its role in the medieval European economy, the way in which its was influenced by physical geography, and how feudal relationships provided the foundation of political order.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Middle Ages by:
1. Understanding & Identifying tier 2 and 3 vocabulary words based on the unit.
2. Describing the impact Charlemagne had on Western Europe.
3. Understanding the political and social instability of medieval Europe that led to the creation of feudalism.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk/DOK 3&4: Daily Starter: Students will answer a DOK 3/4 question based on the the chunked passage taken from the History Channels website "This Day in History."
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach/: Feudal vocabulary: Teacher will model how to complete the vocabulary section of their graphic organizer. Teacher will hand out 5 cards that have the term and vocabulary on it to each group and give out directions.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Progress Monitoring: Feudal Vocabulary: Teacher will go over the answers to the vocabulary assignment after verifying the groups that completed the assignment before the time had expire so they can get a point for that box for completing it on their own.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
SDAIE: Group/TPS/QW: Feudal Vocabulary: Students will work in their groups to identify and justify the tier 2 and 3 terms to the images on their graphic organizer. Students will read the cards with the definations to their group members and discuss which image goes with the term by analyzing and justifying their conclusion. Students will have 10 minutes to complete this portion of their graphic organizer.
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Focus Notes/Talk to Text: Western Europe during early Middle Ages: Students will be given a set of Focus notes and chunked passages from their textbook. Students will have 6 minutes to read the chunk passage and find the evidence that will answer the 3 essential questions on their Focus Notes. If students finish prior to the time, teacher will check their answers and award points to their assignments. Repeat for all questions.

7.6.2: Describe the spread of Christianity north of the Alps and the roles played by the early church and by monasteries in its diffusion after the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire.
7.6.4: Demonstrate an understanding of the conflict and cooperation between the Papacy and European monarchs.

1. Identify & Explain the churches hierarchy and their responsibilities.
2. Explain the struggle of power between the monarchs and pope.

Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter based on "This Day in History" by reading a chunked section and placing the sentences in or of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach/: Feudal hierarchy: Teacher will provide a mini lecture by describing the roles of the feudal society that students should had already completed by watching 4 mini videos. Teacher will provide further examples and clarify responsibilities.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Church Hierarchy: Teacher will go over the answers to the hierarchy system of the Christian church and provide further explanation.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Graphic Organizer/Chunked reading/Text to Read: Medieval Europe: Students will read pages 66-67 in their book. The book has three chunked readings that describe the churches hierarchy system during the Middle Ages and the same one that is still used today. Students will write down the order of the clergy and provide the role and responsibility for each one.
