Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, war fare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Understand and Explain the the social structure of the Mayan Civilization.

Anticipatory Set (5 min):
Starter: 5 W's: Students will read a chunked section from "This Day in History" and be able to identify the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, Why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach: Maya's Three Period Timeline: Teacher will go over and lecture on the three distinctive time periods of the Mayan Civilization. Teacher will go over the times and major events that occurred during that time. Students will correct their papers if needed. Teacher has already checked for completion.
SDAIE: Close Read/Talking to Text: Mayan Class Structure: Teacher will Cloze Read the section Class Structure. Teacher will use talking to the text to help them in selecting the appropriate job responsibilities in the tier of the class pyramid.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Mayan Class Structure: Teacher will guided students on how to complete the Maya Class Structure Pyramid. Teacher will close read the paragraph dealing with "The Ruler." After each paragraph students will go back and read that to themselves. Teacher will guide students on how to select the evidence that demonstrates the role and responsibility of the ruler so they can write it down in their graphic organizer.
Independent Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: Whisper Read/TPS/Group: Maya Class Structure: Students will be grouped in 3's or 4 and will be assigned a number which corresponds to one of the 4 remaining Mayan Class structures in the book. Student will then read the class structure section on page 374-375 and complete the class structure pyramid by identifying the roles and responsibilities of that class. Once they have completed that, each member will share their class role and responsibility with remaining members of the group. As one presents, the others will write down the notes.
Homework
Complete Edpuzzle "Maya Corn" due Friday, August 26, 2022.
Closure (5 min.)
1. Clean up.
2. Dismiss Class.
Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
