Correlation to State Content Standards
7.5.1: Describe the significance of Japan’s proximity to China and Korea and the intellectual, linguistic, religious, and philosophical influence of those countries on Japan.
7.5.2: Discuss the reign of Prince Shotoku of Japan and the characteristics of Japanese society and family life during his reign.
8.4.3: Analyze the rise of capitalism and the economic problems and conflicts that accompanied it (e.g., Jackson’s opposition to the National Bank; early decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court that reinforced the sanctity of contracts and a capitalist economic system of law).
8.5.2: Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced west ward expansion and the Mexican-American War.

Daily Journal: Read today's passage of "This day in history" and identify the 5 W's by highlighting the passage and finally answering the Essential Question.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Model: Indian Removal: Teacher will give a quick lecture of the reasons that led to the Indian Removal and U.S. goal of assimilating the Indian Population during the mid 1800's.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Japan Buddhism and Confucianism: Teacher will display four probable essential questions that students should have come up with during their reading.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Exit Question: Indian Removal: Teacher will go over the essential question.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Japan Influences: Teacher will go over the possible answers to the essential question that students could have come up with from the reading.
Independent Practice (22 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Movie Clip: Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee: Students will watch Bury my Heart at Wounded knee and answer the essential questions on Google Classroom.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Japan Buddhism and Confucianism: Students will read and take their own Focus Notes on the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism in Japan.
