Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Starter: Students will read and identify the 5 W's of events in This Day in History.... Teacher will go over answers with the students.
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
SDAIE: Annotate/Talk to Text/Close Read: The Great Awakening and French and Indian War: Teacher will lead students in a Close Read of the sections mentioned above. Teacher will then use talk to the text to guide students in annotating the text. Students will answer an essential question dealing with the text. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: Graphic Organizer/Close Read/TPS: Maya Class Structure: Teacher will close read the first section of the text dealing with the ruling class. Once teacher has read the selection will ask a series of questions that will guide students in understand what important information to withdraw from the text. (7th Grade)
Guided Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Annotate/Talk to Text/Close Read: The Great Awakening and French and Indian War: Teacher will go over the answers to what should've been annotated and along the way clarify the reading and check for understanding. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Class Structure: Teacher will go over the answers to the section. Teacher will present further examples and pictures to ensure student understand of the passage and concept of class structure. (7 Grade)
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Book to Paper: America before the Warfare: Students will analyze a map illustrating the countries that occupied the united states and identify that on their map by labeling using different colors to denote the three countries that occupied the United States prior to the French and Indian War. They will then shade in the same map after the French and Indian War and compare and contrast both maps by answering an Essential Question. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: Graphic Organizer/Whisper Read: Maya Class Structure: Students will continue by reading the rest of the section in their books dealing with the Mayan Social Class. Students will complete the Graphic Organizer by filling in the appropriate information in the social pyramid. Students will define three words (social pyramid, ritual, and sacrifice). Finally students will answer an essential question connecting the Mayan Social Structure to something they can relate to (e.g. Family, school, business, etc).
Homework

Closure (5 min.)
1. Clean up.
2. Answer questions from students

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
