Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.1: Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome (e.g., significance of Roman citizenship; rights under Roman Law, Roman art, architecture, engineering, and philosophy, preservation and transmission of Christianity).
7.1.2: Discuss the geographic borders of the empire at its height and the factors that threatened its territorial cohesion.
7.1.3: Describe the establishment by Constantine of the new capital in Constantinople and the development of the Byzantine Empire, with an emphasis on the consequences of the development of two distinct European civilizations, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic, and their two distinct views on church-state relations.

RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter based on "This Day in History" by reading a chunked section and placing the sentences in or of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach: Test: Teacher will go over the directions to the test and the agenda for the remaining part of the class if students finish early. Students will be working on missing assignments.
Guided Practice (x min.)
SDAIE: Progress Monitoring: Test: Teacher will pace the room and monitor students to ensure they aren't using more than one tab or window during the test. Teacher will be available for questions on how to answer test questions if students are having problems with Edulastic.
Independent Practice (35 min.)
SDAIE: Metacognition: Roman & Byzantine Empire Test: Students will be assessed on the rise and fall and achievements of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Students will take their test using Edulastic.
SDAIE: Metacognition: Missing Assignments: Students will work on missing assignments. First from their History class then from their other classes. All work from the Rome Unit will be due by Sunday.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: Middle Ages due by Friday at 5 p.m.
