Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.1 Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Incan economies, trade, and development of urban societies.
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, warfare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
RH 7: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
RH9: Analyze the relationship between a primary and secondary source on the same topic.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.

Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Identify and explain the Aztecs daily life.
2. Understand Aztec economy, religion, food, and family life.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Essential Questionn: Student will read a chunked passage from "This Day in History" focusing on one historical event of the day. Studetns will be given an essential question and will have to highlight the evidence within the passage that would provide the answer.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach: Aztec Daily Life: Teacher will explain the directions. The Aztecs daily life graphic organizer is divided into four sections dealing with Family life, Food, Markets, and Religious Practice. Students will have 12 minutes to complete each section before going over the answers. Teacher will check answers as students finish on time. First section was done as a class to demonstrate how the work should be completed.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Talk to Text/Cornell Notes/Close Read/Video Clip: Aztec Family Life: After the 12 minutes are up and teacher as inspected the work from students who are done, teacher will go over the answers to the sections and provide further clarification and video clip with a table talk question.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Think Aloud/Cornell Notes/Text Related Questions/Close Paragraph/Sentence Stem/Text to Speech: Aztec Daily Life: Students will learn about the daily life of the Aztecs by reading (or listening to audio) and complete Text Related Questions, Close Paragraph, and Cornell Notes. Students will be given 12 minutes to read the selection on Aztec Food, Market, and Religious Practices. Students who complete their assignment much have it verified by the teacher.
