Correlation to State Content Standards
7.2.2: Trace the origins of Islam and the life and teachings of Muhammad, including Islamic teachings on the connection with Judaism and Christianity.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
I am learning the religion of Islam, its beliefs, and practices by:
1. Explaining the Five Pillars of Islam and associating each one with its definition and basic practices.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.) Daily Journals: Students will use the chunk reading from "This day in History" to provide evidence to support the CLAIM in their daily Starter.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: The Five Pillars of Islam: Teacher will go over the directions to the assignment and introduce/explain the First Pillar of Islam
Guided Practice (10min.)
SDAIE:Close Read/TPS/Talk to text: The Five Pillars of Islam Slides: Teacher will lead students in a close read and demonstration in how to complete the assignment by guiding students in completing the second pillar of Islam Salat. Teacher will run through the hints that are provided on the slides for the second pillar.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Text to Speech/Talk to the text: Five Pillars of Islam: Students will work on the last three remaining pillars. They will idependently read the chunked reading or use the Text to Speech function to have the reading read to them by the computer software. Students will then complete their slides using the Talk to text hints provided by the teacher to help guide their reading and comprehension so they pull the evidence from the reading.
Homework.

Closure (5 min.)
1. Clean up.
