Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.1 Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Incan economies, trade, and development of urban societies.
7.7.3: Explain how and where each empire arose and how the empires were defeated by the Spanish.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.

Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Create floating land (chinampas) resembling those built by the Aztecs in Lake Texcoco.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W’s: Students will read a section from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, Why.) Teacher will use thumbs up/down for quick checking for understanding before going over the answer.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Mode/Video Clip: Building Chinampas: Teacher will go over the procedures and expectations to the project. Teacher will set the stage building on yesterdays lesson in which the Aztec rose to power. Teacher show a quick video clip demonstrating the achievement the Aztecs achieved in their short tenure as the dominate tribe in Central Mexico.
Guided Practice (X min.)
SDAIE: Progress Monitoring : Building Chinampas: Teacher will walk around ensuring students are not messing around or misusing the materials. After every 10 minutes teacher will display a hint to help them in their building process.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
SDAIE: Realia/Group: Building Chinampas: Students will work in their groups of 4 to create floating chinampas just like the Aztecs did to allow their empire to grow and expand. Students will have all the materials needed to create these "floating gardens."
Homework.
