7.7.4: Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journal: On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most memorable speeches in American history. The Battle of Gettysburg, fought some four months earlier, was the single bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Over the course of three days, more than 45,000 men were killed, injured, captured or went missing.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Talk to the text: Vocabulary Art Walk: Teacher will be introduced to the vocabulary words as they are used in the Constitution. Teacher will read the passage using Cloze reading. Then teacher will model Talk to the text to guide students in selecting the context clues.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Cloze Read/Talk to Text: Pope Urban II: Teacher will Cloze read the Pope Urban II speech of Cleremont.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Talk to text/Metacognition: Vocabulary Art Walk: Teacher will use the talk to the text to have students identify and explain the definition.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Story of the Crusades: Teacher and students will review the answer to the graphic organizer covering the first four crusades.
Independent Practice (22 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Graphic Organizer/TPS: Constitutional Vocab Walktrhough: Students will work together to decipher the meaning of 5 tier III vocabulary words that are important in the Constitution. Students will read the section and use the context clues to figure out the definition. Lastly, one student from each group will go around the room and match a picture to the word.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Graphic Organizer/Whisper Read/5W's: Story of the Crusades: Students will read pages 163-165 dealing with Crusades 1-4. As the students read each section they will answer the 5 W's. The assignemnt is on Google Classroom titled Story of the Crusades.
