Correlation to State Content Standards
7.6.6: Discuss the causes and course of the religious Crusades and their effects on the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish populations in Europe, with emphasis on the increasing contact by Europeans with cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean world.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Crusades by:
1. Understanding the cause and affect of the first four Crusades.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/DOK 3/4/Chunk Reading: Daily Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from History Channels "This day in History" and answer the DOK 3 or 4 question of the day by annotating the answer in the passage and using their prior knowledge to answer the question.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach/: Battles of the Crusades: Teacher will model how to complete the assignments. Teacher will progress monitor and grade their assignments as they complete their section.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Progress Monitoring/Mini Lecture/Video Clips: Battles of the Crusades: After students time is up from working on their independent studies, teacher will provide a mini lecture as teacher goes over the answers. Teacher would have already graded the students work prior to reveiwing the answers. Video Clip will follow after the explanation.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Chunked Reading/talk to the text/Graphic Organizer/Text Related Questions/TPS/Sentence Stems: Battles of the Crusades: Students will have ten minutes to complete the last two Crusades (3 and 4). For the third crusades, students will read a chunked passage and complete a series of Cornell Notes that has hints (talk to the text) to guide students comprehension of the event. For the fourth crusades, once again students will have a chunked passage and answer five text related questions. Students will be given the sentence stems to write in complete sentences.

SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Battles of the Crusades: Teacher will explain the directions to the Battles of the Crusades and demonstrate where they will find the answes in the textbook pages 163-165. Teacher will explain each of the sections from the Graphic Organizer. Teacher will take questions before students start work.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Model/CER: QuickWrite: Teacher and students will go over the CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, from the QuickWrite. Teacher will walk students over it and explain the thought process on completing it.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: CER/QuickWrite: Why Fight: Students will complete a QuickWrite were students will focus on how the speech delivered by Pope Urban II motivated people to take up the cross and embark on the Crusades. Students will be asked to focus on the last line of the speech as the evidence to sum up peoples decision on going on the Crusades.
SDAIE: Jigsaw/Metacognition/Cornell Notes/Focus Notes/Cloze Paragraph/Text Related Questions: Battles of the Crusades: Students will select one of the four crusades. They will read their selective section. Once they have read their section they will complete the assignment that corresponds to their section in the Graphic Organizer. Once each student is done with their section they will share their answer within their group members.

Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: CER/QuickWrite: Pope Urban II last line: Students will analyze the last line from Pope Urban II speech and determine from that sentence why so many took up the cross and embarked on the Crusades. Students will use he CER method to answer the QuickWrite.
SDAIE: Focus Notes/Chunked/Readability Adjusted/Text to Speech: First Crusade: Students will read or use their headphones to have the selection read to them. The reading as been adjusted for their readability and chunked. Students will be given three Focus Questions in which they will have to find evidence from the text that will answer the questions provided.

SDAIE: Direct Teach: Crusades Test: Teacher will explain the directions to the Battles of the Crusades and demonstrate where they will find the answes in the textbook pages 163-165. Teacher will explain each of the sections from the Graphic Organizer. Teacher will take questions before students start work.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Fourth Crusade: Teacher will go over the answers to the four questions dealing with the Fourth Crusade and provide further clarification.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Sentence Stem/Chunked/Readability: Fourth Crusade: Students will read a chunked passage (or use headphones) and answer four questions that demonstrate the events that took place during the fourth crusade.
SDAIE: Google Form/Visuals/Video Clip: Relics of the Crusades: Students will watch a video clip that will demonstrate how relics from the past can be analyzed to help place them in the right time of history. Students will answer 10 questions on their Google Forms to check for understanding as they watch the video clip.
