Correlation to State Content Standards
7.5.1: Describe the significance of Japan’s proximity to China and Korea and the intellectual, linguistic, religious, and philosophical influence of those countries on Japan.
7.5.2: Discuss the reign of Prince Shotoku of Japan and the characteristics of Japanese society and family life during his reign.
8.4.3: Analyze the rise of capitalism and the economic problems and conflicts that accompa nied it (e.g., Jackson’s opposition to the National Bank; early decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court that reinforced the sanctity of contracts and a capitalist economic system of law).
8.5.2: Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced west ward expansion and the Mexican-American War.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journal: Read today's passage of "This day in history" and identify the 5 W's by highlighting the passage and finally answering the Essential Question.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Model: Jackson Focus Notes: Teacher will go over setting up the Focus Notes and work with the students completing the first section of the the Focus Notes dealing with the campaign of 1828 and how it represented a mudslinging campaign.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Visual Vocabulary: Japan vocabulary: Teacher will display the 7 pictures that represent the units vocabulary. After students have defined the vocabulary they will match the pictures displayed on the screen to their term.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Understanding Jackson: Teacher will review the type of individual Jackson was based on the reading. Students will correct their notes.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Japan Influences: Students will work with their group and identify five pictures and decide what aspect of cultural does it cover and were it came from.
Independent Practice (22 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Madison and Monroe: Students will complete the test. Once they are done with the multiple choice section they will answer the two short response questions using the CER method.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition/CER: Imperial China Test: Students will complete the test. Once they are done with the multiple choice section they will answer the two short response questions using the CER method.
