7.2.4: Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquest and treaties, emphazing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
I am learning about Muhammad's early life and turning point on his conversion.
Understand the political power that accompanied the spread of Islam.

Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: CER/Chunk: Students will read a chunk passage from the History Channel's "This Day in History" and using the CLAIM provided by the teacher, find evidence that will support the claim.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Direct Teach/Close Reading: The Four Caliphs: Teacher will lead students in a close reading of a chunked section "The Four Caliphs" that is from the textbook pages 123-124. Teacher will read the events of the first two caliphs, clarify the reading, and then give students time to complete their Cornell Notes. For the last teacher will just lecture.
Guided Practice (10min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Cornell Notes: The Four Caliphs CN: Teacher will go over the first two Cornell notes dealing with Abu Bakr and Umar as the first caliphs and explain their accomplishments, how they spread islam, and how they maintained control over the region.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk/Whisper Read/Text to Talk/Talk to text/Cornell Notes: The Four Caliphs: Students will read the last two chunked paragraphs or use their headphones to have it read to them and complete two sections of the Cornell Notes explaining the accomplishments of the last two caliphs after Muhammad died.
SDAIE: Chunk/Book to Paper/TPS: The Spread of Islam: Students will use the chunked reading from box 1 to visually identify the spread of Islam under three reigns; Muhammad, the four caliphs, and then the Umayaad clans. This will be done by coloring in their maps. They could also use the textbook page 124. Students will then answer three questions using the map they just created.
Homework.
