7.1.1: Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome (e.g., significance of Roman citizenship; rights under Roman Law, Roman art, architecture, engineering, and philosophy, preservation and transmission of Christianity).
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be (able to):
1. Review the fall of the Roman Empire, its accomplishments, and the rise of the Byzantine Empire.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter based on "This Day in History" by reading a chunked section and placing the sentences in or of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Roman Empire Review: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the review questions. Once a student answers the question correctly they will get a prize. Teacher will clarity and provide further examples.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: Realia: Roman Aqueducts: Teacher will present a challenge to the students. Teacher will take the part of a King ruling Western Europe. Teacher will explain to the students that there are stories that in the Eastern part of the empire, water gets delivered to peoples houses. No need to go and transport water from the river. Challenge will be to create a working model on how water can be transported without buckets to peoples houses.
Independent Practice (35 min.)
SDAIE: Metacognition: Kahoot: Students will participate in a 10 question review game using Kahoot to review questions about the Roman Empire.
SDAIE: Metacognition: Roman Empire Review: Students will answer 9 riddled questions about the fall of the Roman Empire, its accomplishments, origins of Christianity, and the rise of the Byzantine Empire. Students will be allowed to use all their notes from the graphic organizer to complete the assignment. Each review question will guide students to the correct graphic organizer they need to use to answer the riddled questions.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: due by Friday at 5 p.m.
