Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, war fare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
8.1.1: Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. ANALYZE the actions of the Second Continental Congress as colonists unite against British Rule. (8th Grade).
2. Create a timeline about the Battle of Bunker Hill. (8th Grade)
3. Create a letter to King George III explaining why the colonies are breaking all political ties with Great Britain. (8th Grade)
4. Compare the cultural legacy of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca empire through their advancements. (7th Grade)
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Think Aloud/Annotate: The Second Continental Congress: Teacher will read the two paragraphs dealing what the action plan the delegates set out on the Second Continental Congress. Students will listen to the audio of the teachers Think Aloud to guide their annotating. Students will then answer an essential question to check for understanding.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Direct Teach: Maya, Aztec, Inca advancement: Teacher will read the passage dealing with the Maya advancements. At the end of the paragraph teacher will discuss advancements with the students.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Quick Write: Voices from the Past: Students will listen to two quotes one from Patrick Henry and the other from Washington. Students will then explain why they would have said that.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Inca Kahoot: Students will participate in a review game using Kahoot about the Inca Empire.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/VIP’s: Maya, Aztec, Inca advancement: Teacher will help students complete the first section of the graphic organizer. Class will discuss and categorize the advancements of the Mayan Empire on the graphic organizer.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Whisper Read/Summarize: Battle of Bunker Hill: Students will read the events of Bunker Hill and summarize the events in order on their graphic organizer.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/Graphic Organizer/Visuals: Maya, Aztec, Inca Advancements: Students will read a chunked section from the textbook dealing with the advancements dealing with the Maya, Aztec, and Inca empires. They will write down the advancements in a graphic organizer so that they can visually compare how similar the empires were. Once that is completed, students are provided with a series of visuals and must be able to identify which empire it belongs to and explain the purpose of it.
Homework.
