Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
7.4.4: Trace the growth of the Arabic language in government, trade, and Islamic scholarship in West Africa.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be (able to):
1. Assessed on the social, political, religious, and economic impact of the trans-Saharan trade routes had on the three empires of Western Africa.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from "This day in History" and be able identify the topic of the passage.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach: Test Procedures: Teacher will explain the procedures and expectations for taking a test in History.
Guided Practice (X min.)
SDAIE: Progress Monitoring: Ancient West African Test: Teacher will monitor students taking the test by walking around the classroom and check to make sure students are not Googling the answers. Teacher will remind of students of the time left.
Independent Practice (35 min.)
SDAIE: Metacognition: Ancient West African Test: Students will complete their test on West Africa. Test will assess students on the social, political, religious, and economic impact the trans-Saharan trade routes had on the development of Western Africa three major empires; Ghana, Mali, and Songhai.
SDAIE: Metacognition: Missing Assignments: Students will work on completing their missing assignments on Western Africa as students are completing their test.
