7.8: Students analyze the origins, accomplishments, and geographical diffusion of the Renaissance.
7.8.1: Describe the way in which the revival of classical learning and the arts fostered a new interest in humanism.
7.8.2: Explain the importance of Florence in the early stages of the Renaissance and the growth of independent trading (e.g. Venice), with emphasis on the cities' importance in the spread of Renaissance ideas.
7.8.4: Describe the growth and effects of new ways of disseminating information.

Students will be able to:
1. Understand and Explain what a fresco and grid portrait is.
2. Create an enlarged portrait using the gird drawing technique.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunk section of "This Day in History" and answer the essential question in complete sentences.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Chunk Reading: Grid and Fresco Painting: Teacher will explain what grid and fresco paintings are and how they work through two chunked reading selections of Grid and Fresco. Teacher will also show a short video clip that demonstrates each of the techniques.
Guided Practice (X min.)
SDAIE: Progress Monitoring: Portrait of Goofy: Teacher will walk around the class as students are working on their grid portrait.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
SDAIE: Grid Portrait: Portrait of Goofy: Students will utilize the Renaissance technique of Grid drawing to draw an enlarged replica of the character Goofy. Student with the best drawing wins a snack. Students will get the experience of understand what it takes to be a master painter and realize that time was important to the painters. This is why is was important for the painters to have patrons to help support their cause.
