Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the collapse of the Aztecs by:
Identifying who was Hernán Cortés.
Understanding how the conquest began.
Common Core Literacy Standard

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Starter: Students will learn the difference between Hate Speech and Freedom of Speech and be able to respond to online hate speech.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model: Know Your Enemy: Teacher will explain the assignment to the students. Teacher will explain to the students what they are looking for in order to be able to understand the type of person Cortés was.
SDAIE: Close Read/Chunked/Annotate/Video Clip: Let the Conquest Begin: Teacher will close read chunked passages from the text book dealing with how the conquest began. Video clips will be shown to students that visualize the readings to further students understanding.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Direct Teach : Know your Enemy and Let the Conquest Begin: Teacher will go over the answers the two sections and provide clarification.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Video Clip/Brain Drain/Group/EQ/Video Clip: Know your Enemy: Students will work with their groups to undertand the type of person Cortés was. Students will watch a video clip that explains the type of person Cortés was and they will
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Video Clip/Graphic Organizer/Talk to the Text: Aztec Empire Expansion: Students will complete a set of Cornell Notes with talk to the text hints that will guide thier thinking and selecting the important information. Students will watch a short Video Clip and be given 10 minutes to complete the assignment. Students who do not have a computer will be given the reading to complete the assignment.

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Quiz: Students will take a Quiz based on their starters from last week. Weekly starter quiz teaches students the skill of studying and taking test.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Close Read: Aztec Class Structure: Teacher will close read the section dealing with the introduction and the ruler. Teacher will clarify and discuss how the Aztec class structure is different from that of the Maya. Will explain the directions for the assignment. Teacher will go over the answers to the order and explanation of the Aztec Rise to Power. Teacher already checked assignment for completion
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS : Aztec Class Structure: Teacher will and students will gather the information from the reading and place the responsibility and privileges of the ruler. Will go over the Prior Knowledge question.
Independent Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: Jigsaw/Group: Aztec Class Structure: Students will be given one of the four remaining class structures. They will read their section and underline the class responsibility and privilege. Once they are done with the reading and annotating they will write their answers on the Graphic Organizer.
