Correlation to State Content Standards
7.2.3: Explain the significance of the Qur’an and the Sunna has the primary sources of Islamic beliefs, practice, and law, and their influence in Muslims’ daily life.
7.2.4: Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Trace the origins of the Islamic schism.
2. Understand the difference between the Sunni and Shi'ite and their ongoing conflict.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.) Starter: Students will complete their "This Day in History" starter in which they will have to identify evidence from the chunked reading to suppor the CLAIM.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Chunked Reading/Annotate/Talk to Text/Close Reading: Origins of Sunni and Shi'ite: Teacher will lead a lecture using the SDAIE strategies listed above and video clips to help students trace the origins of the Islamic schism that brought forth the Sunni and Shi'ite. Teacher will provide clarification to why it happened and why it continues to be a problem today.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Essential Question: Teacher will go over the answers to the essential questions based on the chunked reading.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Video Clip/Whisper Read/talking to the Text: Conflict with Sunni & Shi'ite: Students will work on completing their Cornell Notes. The video will be shown once as a class. Students can complete as much of the Cornell Notes as they can. Cornell Notes have hints to guide students comprehension of the reading. Once the Class video has been shown students will continue to work on the Cornell Notes. Student with headphones will rewatch the video and students without will use the reading provided to complete the Cornell Notes.
