7.7.1: Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Incan society
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about Meso-America by:
Tracing the agricultural, religious, and political rise of Meso-American Civilizations through the origins of the Olmecs.
Identify the boundaries of the Mayan civilization and the its major cities.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9: Draw evidence from information texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W's/Select to Speech: Students will work on their daily starter by reading a chunked passage from "This Day in History" and identifying the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, and Why).
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Chunking/Cloze Read/Annotate/Video Clips/Table Talk/EQ/Talk to text: Origins of the Maya Civilization : Teacher will lead a close reading of a chunked selection from the textbook page 372. The reading deals with the origins of the Maya civilization by introducing the Olmecs. After reading the paragraphs students will annotate using Talk to the text hints provided by the teacher and then answer the DOK 1 essential questions
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/TPS/: Origins of the Maya Civilization Cornell Notes : Teacher will go over the answers to the Cornell Notes and provide mini lecture to clarify the evidence from the Cornell Notes.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Talk to the Text: Origins of the Maya: Students will use the chunked reading from box 1 taken from the textbook page 372 to complete the Cornell Notes. Teacher has provided Talk to the Text hints that will guide the students note taking.
SDAIE: Book to Paper: Maya Boundary: Students will use the map on page 373 in their textbooks to identify the Mayan territory by shading it on their map. They will also identify four of the key Mayan cities on the map.
Homework.

Closure (3 min.)
1. Clean up.

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
