Correlation to State Content Standards
7.2: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Islam in the Middle Ages.
7.2.1: Identify the physical features and describe the climate of the Arabian peninsula, its relationship to surrounding bodies of land and water, and nomadic and sedentary ways of life.
8.1.1: Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Chunking/Annotate/Talk to text/Video Clip: Turning Point in the War: Teacher will close read two chunked sections. One dealing with Washington’s plan to win the war and the other dealing with Battle of Saratoga. Students will listen to the audio talk to the text from the teacher to guide their annotations. Students will answer an essential question focusing on the reading.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Talk to Text/Annotate: Arabian Peninsula Geography: Teacher will close read three chunked paragraphs dealing with the geographical, economical, and political features of the Arabian Peninsula. Students will listen to the teachers talk to the text audio to help guide their annotations after each paragraph.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Sentence Stems/TPS: Winter at Valley Forge: Teacher and students will go over the answer to the four questions. Prior to the video, teacher and students will write down the sentence stem to each question.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Essential Questions/Map skills: Teacher and students will go over the essential questions and the correct labeling of the map of the Arabian Peninsula.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Talk to Text/Audio/Annotate: Turning Point: After the close reading of the passage, students will use the talk to text audio created by the teacher to help guide their annotations. Students will answer the essential question after each passage.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Sentence Stems/Video Clip: Winter at Valley Forge: Students will watch a video clip demonstrating the hardships encountered by Washington and his men at Valley Forge and how they overcame those hardships.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Visual/tactile: Arabian Peninsula: Students will have to label the geographical and political features of the Arabian Peninsula. They will use the map in their book (teacher will upload the chapter and will circle the map they will use). Students will label continents, seas, cities, and rivers to familiarize themselves with this units geography.
