7.6 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Medieval Europe.
7.6.3: Understand the development of feudalism, its role in the medieval European economy, the way in which it was influenced by physical geography (the role of the manor and the growth of towns), and how feudal relationships provided the foundation of political order.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Analyze and explain the social structures needed to have a functional civilization.
2. Understand the development of feudalism during the Middle Ages.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Journal: Students will answer the daily fact of the day by identifying the 5 W's.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model: QW CER-Structuring Society: Teacher will set up the stage of having society fall apart. Teacher will show the clip from the Walking Dead in which Rick wakes up from the coma to realize that the world he knew is no longer there. Teacher will tell students to brainstorm about what will be needed to restructure society and bring it back to were it was before. This is to how society would have to adapt to a new world after the Fall of Rome in Wester Europe.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Group TPS/ CER: Restructuring Society: Teacher will lead the conversation and go through the evidence that groups came up with when restructuring society. Each group will be responsible for coming up with two items that will be needed. Teacher will help class to write the CLAIM, but students will need to provide two evidence and two reasons.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
SDAIE: CER/QW: Restructuring Society: Students will write a CER QuickWrite explaining how they would restructure society after it has fallen down. Once that is done, students will read the introduction to Western Europe and find out what was needed to survive. They will compare their answers to that of the book and in the QW will finalize what the book said was needed to insure survival in a chaotic world. (Book hints on the creation of feudalism with people pledging loyalty to a strong leader who will provide roles and rules for society.
