Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of the Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Picture Annotation: Catalan Atlas: Teacher will show the Catalan Atlas and guide students in answering four questions based on the map. Students will analyze the map and decipher the meaning of it.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Model: Washington’s Presidency Test: Teacher will go over the rules and procedure on how to log in and take the test using Edulastic.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Islam and Mali: Teacher will go over the answers and provide further explanation to the questions guiding the students Focus Notes.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Progress Monitor: Test: Using Edulastic I will monitor students taking the test. Students who are logged into class and not taking the class will be reminded by teacher and phone calls will be made to get students on the test.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Islam and Mali: Students will read the section dealing with the impact Islam had on Mali and Mansa Musa and then complete the Focus Notes.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition: Washington’s Presidency Test: Students will be taking a test dealing with the presidency of Washington. Students will work on the panorama survey, Homework, and then missing assignments.
