Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.1. Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome (e.g., significance of Roman citizenship; rights under Roman law; Roman art, architecture, engineering, and philosophy; preservation and transmission of Christianity) and its ultimate internal weaknesses (e.g., rise of autonomous military powers within the empire, undermining of citizenship by the growth of corruption and slavery, lack of education, and distribution of news).
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the life and teachings of Jesus.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter by reading an out of order chunked reading from "This day in History." Students will be tasked to place the events in order of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Video Clip: Life and Teachings of Jesus FN: Teacher will lecture about the life and teachings of Jesus. Lecutures and clarifications will take place after students are given time to complete portion of the section on thier own. Teacher will show a video clip that goes along with reading and discuss the Table Talk Question from the video.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Life and Teachings of Jesus FN Teacher will go over the answers to the Focus notes. Students will correct their notes.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Select to Speech/Focus Notes:The Life and Teachings Jesus: Students will complete Focus Notes on the life and teachings of Jesus. The section has been chunked into four passages dealing with four question, one question per section. Students will have to read the passage and take down notes. They will be prompted by a time set by the teacher to complete those sections before teacher lectures on it and they go over their answers. Process will repeat till all four sections are done.

Starters CER: Students will read four sentences and place them in order of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
ELD Strategy: Direct Teach: Life and Teachings of Jesus: Teacher will provide mini lectures clarifying the life and teaching of Jesus focusing on Rome during his lifetime, information derived from the gospels, and the message he promoted.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
ELD Strategy:: TPS: Origins of Christianity: Teacher will go over the answers to the definitions and provide clarification.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
ELD Strategy:: Focus Notes/Chunked Reading/Text to Speech/Video Clip: Life and Teachings of Jesus: Students will be given four chunked sections from the textbook. They could read it or chose to have it read to them by the computer or Kami uisng their headphones. After the reading students will complete a series of focus notes where they will be given three questions and they are to find the evidence that will answer the questions within the reading.
