7.4.1. Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.2 Analyze the importance of family, labor specialization, and regional commerce in the development of states and cities in West Africa.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journal: On December 9, 1979, a commission of scientists declare that smallpox has been eradicated. The disease, which carries around a 30 percent chance of death for those who contract it. In 1796 the English scientist Edward Jenner discovered a vaccine. Unlike other types of inoculation, Jenner’s vaccine, made from a closely-related disease that affects cows, carried zero risk of transmission.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Bill of Rights: Teacher will explain Amendments 3-6. Teacher will explain and review the amendments.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Cloze Read/annotate: Rise of Kingdoms: Teacher will lead students in a reading of the Rise of Kingdoms in Africa.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Bill of Rights: Students will be answering QuickWrites dealing with scenarios based on the amendments. They will also draw a symbol or add a picture from Google that deals with the amendment.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Talk to text/Annotate: Rise of Kingdoms: Teacher will use talk to text to help students annotate the passage from the book dealing with the rise of kingdoms in Africa.
Independent Practice (22 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/VIP's: Bill of Rights: Students will identify and explain the amendments in their own words.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Label: Africa Kingdoms: Students will identify the three kingdoms of West Africa.
