Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.1 Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Incan economies, trade, and development of urban societies.
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, warfare, religious belies and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Identify and Explain the impact of religious beliefs and practices of the Mayan society.
2. Describe the role the priests had in Mayan society.
3. Explain the impact religion had on Maya society.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W’s: Students will work on identifying the 5 W’s on a short reading from “This day in History.”
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Teacher will model how to complete the Jigsaw assignment by going over the introduction and using Talk to Text to come up with the note using the hint that is provided. After students are all done with their assignment Teacher will go over each of the four sections clarify the Maya's religious beliefs and practice and provide a short video clip that goes along with one of the four categories discussed from the text.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Teacher will review the answers to each of the four sections of the unit dealing with the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds section from the text.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: JigSaw/Chunk Reading/TPS/Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Students will select one of the four readings that will be chunked and provided by the teacher for each section. Each section will have a selected chunk reading that covers the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds from the textbook page 378-379. The reading will be chunked to two paragraphs about 9 sentences. Students will use that reading to gather information for their topics. Once they are done with that each student will then share their findings and teach the other members of their group about their topic as the other members write down their notes in their Cornell Note section of the Graphic Organizers.
SDAIE: Close Paragraph: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Students will use the notes they gathered from their partners and the additional clarification lecture from the teacher to help them complete the explanation of the religious beliefs and practice of the Maya.
SDAIE: VBQ/Video Clips: Mayan Achievements: Students will discover the Mayan achievements dealing with mathematics, water canals, writing, calendar, and roads. Students will watch a video clip dealing with the Maya achievements and answer video based questions. Videos are chunked into clips focusing on the achievement and impact it had to their society and the worlds.
