Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from "This day in History" and be able identify the topic of the passage.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Reading/Annotate/Video/Talk to the text: The Rise of Songhai Empire: Teacher will lead students in a chunked close reading based on the rise of the Songhai Empire. Teacher will demonstrate talk to the text to guide students in their annotations. Teacher will explain the fall of Mali and the rise of Songhai. A video clip will be shown 1 minute to visually express what the chunked reading explained.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/DOK Question: Songhai Adopts Islam: After students have read the following chunked section, teacher will utilize talk to the text to help students answer the DOK level 3 essential question. Students will discuss within their groups to come up with the answer.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/EQ/TPS: Songhai adopts Islam: Students will read a chunked section of how Songhai adopted the religion of Islam. Students will then annotate and try to figure out how Songhai's adopting of Islam contradicts the philosophy of Islam.
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Jigsaw: Songhai's Government and Law: Students will read a jigsaw section and then use their information to complete their section of the Cornell Notes. Students will then share their answers and provide an explanation to how Islam impacted the governemnt of Songhai.
Homework.
